Hays High, TMP host scrimmages Friday

Parents and students from the two local high schools will be treated to back-to-school picnics Friday while also getting a preview of what to expect from their fall athletic teams this season.

Hays High School's Maroon and Gold Kickoff Classic will begin with a public meal at 6 p.m. at Fort Hays State University's Lewis Field Stadium.

All Hays High students with an ID will be admitted free; general public is a free will donation.

Thomas More Prep-Marian High School's Blue and White Scrimmage is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., with most of the action taking place on the TMP campus. The only exception will be the soccer scrimmage, set for 5 p.m. at Shively Field, located just west of the intersection of 12th and Elm streets.

The Monarch volleyball teams will kick off the events on the TMP campus, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

A free-will offering cookout meal will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a watermelon feed. Cross country time trials will begin at 5:30 and end on the football field about 5:50, just before the 6 o'clock start of the football scrimmage. The girls' golf team will be introduced at 6 p.m. north of the fieldhouse, where they will be participating in hitting practice.

At Lewis Field, the boys' soccer team will begin Hays High's night of introductions and scrimmages.

One of the highlights for Indian fans will be honoring the 2013 state track and field championship, won last spring by the HHS boys' team for a fourth consecutive year.

Following is the Indians' full slate of times for Friday's event:

6:40 -- Soccer introductions; 6:45 -- National Anthem, Indian marching band and flag corps; 6:55 -- 2013 state track championship recognition; 7 to 7:45 -- Soccer scrimmage; 7:10 -- Volleyball introductions; 7:20 -- dance team introductions and performance; 7:25 -- Cross country introductions; 7:35 -- Football introductions; 7:45 -- Cheerleader introductions and routine; 7:50 -- Girls' tennis introductions; 7:55 -- Girls' golf introductions; 8 -- Football scrimmage.
