Hays Eagles pick up three wins so far in tourney

CANON CITY, Colo. -- The Hays Legion Eagles baseball team picked up a pair of victories Friday in the first day of tournament action in Canon City, Colo.

Hays defeated Pueblo West, 4-1, then won 8-0 against Piedra Vista in five innings.

Against Pueblo, Layne Downing went the distance to move to 2-0 on the mound. Downing gave up one earned run, scattered seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

The Eagles scored three runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Pueblo scored its lone run in the sixth. Zack Legleiter drove in a pair of runs with no hits. He grounded out to third for an RBI in the first inning, then flew out to left field for an RBI in the three-run fifth.

Connor Rule and Kade Parker each drove in a run. The Eagles scored the four runs on just two hits and one Pueblo error. Kaden Rohr and Rule each had a hit.

Against Piedra Vista, Brady Bieker (1-0) picked up the victory. He pitched all five innings of the shutout. He gave up just one hit and the Eagles did not commit an error. He struck out three.

Jake Sedbrook finished 3 for 3 with a double, two runs scored, and two driven in for the Eagles. Legleiter was 2 for 4.

Saturday, the Eagles moved to 8-2 with a 3-1 win against Air Academy, behind a complete-game victory for Marcus Altman.
