Tiger softball 3-1 to begin season

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- The Fort Hays State University softball team was 3-1 in its first four games of the season at the 8-state Classic. The Tigers defeated East Central (Okla.), 7-3, then lost to Missouri-St. Louis 2-0. FHSU then defeated Southern Nazarene, 9-4 and Quincy (Ill.), 6-4 in 8 innings Saturday.
Against East Central, the Tigers had 12 hits. Riley Krier finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored, while Paxton Duran drove in a pair of runs with a single. Biance Adame collected two hits with a run driven in.
Duran pitched all seven innings. She gave up three earned runs on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
In the loss to Missouri-St. Louis, Kelsey Kimminau took the decision for FHSU. She pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Amanda Vaupel had the Tigers' lone hit.
In Saturday's game against Southern Nazarene, Duran was back in the circle. She gave up all four runs (all earned) on six hits with a strikeout and a walk. Vaupel had a big bat for FHSU. She connected on a two-run home run in the third inning to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
She finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Adame and Krier combined for five hits and four runs in the top of the lineup.
The Tigers are scheduled to finish the tournament with a pair of games today against Minnesota State University and Arkansas-Monticello.
