GREAT BEND -- The High School baseball team fell short of state for the first time in three years Tuesday.

Hays High baseball lost 3-2 to Goddard-Eisenhower in the first round of the Class 5A regional at Great Bend. It was the first time Hays High (15-6) lost in the first round of the regional since 2010.

The Indians got a strong day out of its ace pitcher, senior Hayden Hutchison (4-3). Hays High's workhorse threw a complete game and allowed three earned runs, his first of the season, off seven hits and a walk while striking out three.

At the plate, Hutchison went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a run scored.

Unfortunately for the Indians, few others had strong days at the plate, compiling five hits outside of Hutchison.

Eisenhower (10-11), the eventual regional champion, scored all of its runs in the top of the fourth, putting Hays High in a 3-0 hole.

The Indians responded by driving Hutchison in with an RBI double by senior Zack Legleiter, but they didn't add another run until the seventh when senior center fielder Daniel Bittel drove in a run.

Then with the tying run on third and winning run on first, senior first baseball Chandler Rule hit a pop up to center field to end the year.

Hutchison shattered the record books this season, including career doubles at 41 (also a state record), career RBIs at 84, season hitting percentage at .589, season on-base percentage at .697 and season slugging percentage at 1.018.

On top of the records he broke, he got on many other top-10 lists, such as second in career hits (106), second in season ERA (.57), second in career walks per seven innings pitched (1.16), tied for third in career home runs (9), third in fewest walks in a season per seven innings pitched (.89), fifth in career hitting percentage (.440), tied for fifth in career wins (13), sixth in career runs scored (76) and tied for 10th in season batting average against him as a pitcher (.163).
