GARDEN CITY — Led by sophomore Payton Ruder, the Hays High School boys’ golf team finished second out of 12 teams on Saturday at the Garden City High School Invitational, played at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.
Ruder shot a 6-over par 78 to finish fourth overall. He finished in a three-way tie for third, and ended up fourth on a playoff. Senior Chase Lynd was the fourth piece to the puzzle for the Indians, shooting 83.
Juniors Nathan Romme and Cash Hobson also competed, each shooting 84.
Hutchinson’s Turner Wintz was the overall winner with his 3-over 75, while teammate Jack Lanham took second with a 77. The duo led the Salthawks to the overall team title with 312 points, followed by Hays High’s 319 points.
All five WAC schools competed Saturday. Garden City was the highest finisher after Hays High with 332 points for fifth place. Behind the Buffaloes were Great Bend (344 points for sixth), Dodge City (348 points for eighth), and Liberal (364 points for ninth).
The Indians next varsity meet will be April 22 at the annual Bob Blazer Invitational, held at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays.
