Whether it was on a cut to the basket or a 3-pointer, Hays High School senior Kade Parker wasn't shy about shooting on Saturday against visiting Salina South.

Parker, who averaged 4.7 points per game coming in, finished with a career high 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting to help carry the Indians to a 68-42 win over South at the HHS gym.

"With my threes I have a lot more confidence shooting this year," Parker said. "I tried a little three today and Clayton Riedel made a nice pass to me on the back cut. And Kyler (Niernberger) always finds me on the back cuts. I just try to find the open spots on defense and they find me."

The game was the second in two days for Hays High and South (7-11) after the original contest was rescheduled from Feb. 4 to Saturday due to snow.

After a grinder of a game in a 44-39 win over Garden City on Friday, Hays High (18-0) looked fresh on its way to a 33-15 halftime lead.

"Coach kind of expects that of us, even though this is our second game in two days," Parker said. "We knew they were going to be physical. Everyone went home, got iced up and got ready for the game."

South was able to claw its way back into the game after a 3-pointer by senior Justin Stonebraker, a Fort Hays State University football commit, cut the Indians' lead to 50-37 early in the fourth quarter.

Hays High then went on an 11-0 run to close the door on yet another team's bid to give the Indians' their first loss. Hays High was 7 for 7 from the field in the final quarter and was able to go deep into its bench to finish the game.

"It's a game of runs and sometimes when you get up on someone it's human nature to take off the gas a little bit," Hays High coach Rick Keltner said. "I'm very happy with the way we finished and you have to give them some credit for their run. If we are going to wear someone down we are hoping it's going to happen toward the end of the game and I think that happened."

Senior Brady Werth led Hays High with 18 points, 14 coming in the second half. Senior Lane Clark was also in double figures with 10.

South senior Aaron Mar was the only Cougar player in double figures with 15 points.

Hays High girls can't find shot in loss to South

It was the opportunity the Hays High School girls' basketball team was looking for --  if only the rim had cooperated.

Facing a struggling Salina South team missing two starters because of injury on Saturday, the Indians felt they had a chance at their first win of the season. Instead, Hays High combined to shoot 22 percent from the field (7 for 32) and 12 of 26 from the free-throw line in a 45-28 loss at the HHS gym.

"On the offensive end I think it was 30 to 20 and we shot eight free throws and made one," Hays High coach Kirk Maska said. "We had a chance to climb back in and make it a game there. They were just too athletic for us. We couldn't guard them, not hitting shots and we got ourselves in a hole again."

Hays High (0-18) trailed 26-14 at halftime but had a chance to get back into the game in the second half. The Indians held South to five points in the third quarter, but only scored seven points of their own on one field goal and missed four free throws.

Junior Mattison Schlaefli led the Indians with nine points, five coming from the foul line. Junior Emilee Holloway had 12 points to lead the Cougars.

Hays High hosts Dodge City on Tuesday, which is senior night for the Indians. Game time is 6 p.m. for the girls, boys to follow.
