WICHITA --  Three wrestlers from Hays High School will head to the Class 5A state championships this week at Hartman Arena in Park City.

Two-time defending state champion Preston Weigel blew out the competition at 195 pounds at Saturday's 5A regional at Wichita Heights High School.

After receiving a first-round bye, the top-ranked senior won 17-0 against Salina South junior Cole Hoover in the semifinals, then won 15-0 against Newton senior Heyden Mock for the regional title.

Indian junior Ethan Deterding also qualified for state with a second-place finish at 182 pounds. Deterding won three matches in the regional. He pinned Great Bend junior Masen Torres in the first round, then won 4-1 in the semifinals against Salina Central sophomore Jack Helvey. Deterding, the No. 3 ranked wrestler at 182, fell 9-1 to Newton junior Jared Langley, the No. 2 wrestler in 5A.

Indian senior Vincent Scott ended his regional tournament with a win, pinning Salina Central senior Vince Johnson for third place. Scott suffered a 3-2 loss to Great Bend senior Jacob Crane in the semifinals.
