EL DORADO -- The Hays Larks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Friday's Jayhawk League series opener with the El Dorado Broncos, then pulled away for an 8-2 win.

Derek Birginske hit a three-run home run in the first inning, then Ty Detmer added at two-run shot in the ninth to cap the Larks' scoring. Hays (5-0, 2-0 JL) also got three runs in the seventh, one on an RBI triple by Zair Koeiman.

El Dorado suffered its first loss to move to 4-1, 1-1 in league play.

Jake Fromson pitched six innings in his first start for Hays, and picked up the victory, while Nate Olinger pitched three innings for the save. Fromson gave up two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Olinger gave up just one hit with three strikeouts and no walks in three innings.

Michael Burns finished 4 for 5 in the leadoff spot with two runs scored, the only multi-hit game for Hays. Detmer and Birginske each drove in three runs.

The two teams were slated to play the second game of the series Saturday, but the game was postponed due to field conditions. The two teams will try to play a 5 p.m. doubleheader Sunday.

Hays' next home action is Tuesday against Dodge City.
