McCOOK, Neb. — Liam Stults threw a no-hitter through five innings Saturday, helping the Hays Monarchs Legion baseball team to a 2-0 record in the first day of the McCook, Neb. tournament. The game was called after five innings due to weather in the area.
Stults struck out six with no walks in a 4-0 win against McCook in the Monarchs’ second game of the day. McCook’s two base runners came on errors by the Monarchs.
Hays also defeated Plattsmouth, 3-2, earlier in the day and now stands 6-3 for the season.
Against McCook, Ryan Schippers and Justin Pfeifer each drove in runs. Hays had four hits in the game, one each from Cameron Brin, Ryan Ruder, Pfeifer and Grant Romme.
Against Plattsmouth, the Monarchs scored all three of their runs in the second inning on a bases-clearing triple by Stults, then held on for the victory.
Ricky Hockett pitched the complete game. He allowed one earned run on two hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Stults was 2 for 3 in the game. Ruder, Schippers and Braiden Werth each collected a hit.
The Monarchs are scheduled for two games today, facing Colby at noon, then Chappell at 2:30 p.m. Then, the Monarchs will face the Hays Legion Eagles in a 6 p.m. doubleheader Monday at Larks Park.
