LINCOLN -- The Hays Monarchs picked up two wins Wednesday to force a second title game in the Class AA Zone 6 Tournament.

The Monarchs (17-13) eliminated Smith Center 17-4 (5 innings), then held on for a 3-2 win against host Lincoln County to force a winner-take-all matchup in today's 6 p.m. game. The winner advances to next week's Class AA state tournament in Pratt.

Against Smith Center, Hays jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings, and scored nine more in the fifth to claim the win, behind a three-RBI day for Grant Romme. Romme was 2 for 3 with a home run and three runs scored. Braiden Werth, Pierce Schippers and Taylor Wasinger all drove in two runs.

Schippers (4-4) got the win in four innings. He gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

In the first title game against Lincoln, Hays took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning, but gave up a fourth-inning run, but held on for the victory.

Shane Zimmerman went the distance to move to 2-3. He gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk. Cameron Brin drove in two runs in the leadoff spot. He finished 2 for 4 as Hays finished with just five hits.

Two of Hays' runs were scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
