Phillipsburg — Jory Markiss swept both the long and short go-round at the third annual Phillipsburg PBR, and ended up with stitches in the process.

The Missoula, Mont. cowboy rode his first bull for 86 points and his short go-round bull for 88 points to be the 2014 champion.

Markiss rode the New Frontier Rodeo Co. bull Spit Ball for the short go-round.

“He’s a pretty good bull,” Markiss said. “He had a lot of rear and kick, and came around a few times. I was a little bit out of shape. I wasn’t done trying, so I stuck my chin out there and took a heck of a whack for it, but that’s part of it.”

His “whack” caused him to cut his chin, which required stitches.

While the Built Ford Tough Series is on hiatus, Markiss, who is ranked fortieth in the Series, is competing at the Touring Pro Division events. The BFTS starts back up in mid-August.

“It’s summertime,” Markiss said, “so we’re knuckling down with all the Touring Pro events. So we’re pushing hard, and I’m hoping to be a little higher in the standings this year than I was last year.”

In January, Markiss was voted the Sexiest PBR Bull Rider, with two million votes cast last fall. That wasn’t new news to Markiss.

“My mom always told me I was the sexiest cowboy out there,” he joked.

Second place went to Clint Connely, Stapleton, Neb.

Out of 35 rides, there were eight qualified rides in the long go-round and two in the short go-round.

The PBR is in its third year in Phillipsburg.
