MANHATTAN — The Plainville High School boys' basketball team will have a shot at its first state basketball title Saturday.
Led by 17 points and nine rebounds from senior Hadley Gillum and 13 points and five boards from junior Brent Gehring, the Cardinals defeated tournament mainstay Pittsburg/St. Mary's-Colgan 45-41 in Friday's Class 2A state semifinal game at Bramlage Coliseum.
The win earns a 6:15 p.m. Saturday date with unbeaten St. John-Hudson, a 57-47 win against Olpe.
Gillum finished 3 of 8 from the floor, but hit 11 of 12 free throws. He has scored 37 points in two games at the state tournament, and has 32 rebounds.
Colgan (19-4) was led by 20 points for Austin Commons.
Plainville hasn't been at state since 1994, and hasn't played for a state trophy since placing third in Class 3A in 1984.
