TOPEKA --  Thomas More Prep-Marian graduate Heather Ruder finished second on Saturday at the 2013 Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star Cross Country Race, held at Washburn University.

The races -- boys' and girls' --  were part of the 40th annual Shrine Bowl festivities and featured some of the best cross country talent from across the state.

Ruder ran a time of 12 minutes, 32 seconds in the 2-mile race, 14 seconds behind race winner Kaelyn Balch of Wichita's Bishop Carroll High School.

Among the 20 female runners were Palco's Lizzie Benoit and Norton's Kamilla Jones, who finished with times of 14:52 and 14:57 seconds to finish 18th and 20th, respectively.

Three area runners also ran in the boys' 2-mile, which featured 24 high school athletes. Hays High's Derek Drees led the area with a time of 11:35 to finish in 12th place, just one position and three seconds quicker than Ness City's Wyatt Beckman.

Victoria's Jublain Wohler finished 22nd with a time of 12 minutes, 29 seconds.

Centralia's Lukas Koch ran 10:33 to win the race.
