Monarch girls fall in seventh-place game

HILLSBORO -- The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls' basketball team had a 9-2 advantage early in Saturday's seventh-place game of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic. Then, Republic County took over. The Buffaloes went on a 10-0 run to lead 12-9, and eventually defeated the Monarchs 42-27 at Hillsboro Middle School.
TMP-Marian, which played without several key players who were attending a March for Life event this week, finished the tournament 0-3 and fell to 3-9. Republic County moved to 4-9.
On Friday in the consolation semifinals, the Monarchs fell 35-27 to Goodland, the No. 7 ranked team in Class 4A Division II. Melissa Pfiefer led the Monarchs in Friday's game with 10 points, while Kaylor Gottschalk pulled down nine rebounds. Kate-Lynn King led Goodland with 12 points and 11 boards, as the Cowgirls were scheduled to play for fifth place Saturday against Holcomb.
The Monarchs next travel to Hoisington on Thursday for a 6 p.m. start.
