Rose McFarland didn't hesitate when officials asked her if she wanted a running clock for the fourth quarter.

She glanced up at the scoreboard at the Hays Middle School gym that flashed Guest 57, Home 15.

McFarland's Thomas More Prep-Marian High School girls' squad was the home team. If coaches agree, the clock can run without stoppage for the fourth quarter once a lead reaches 30 points.

"No," McFarland said.

"These girls need to play," said McFarland, whose 15-member squad is made up of 12 underclassmen, including five freshmen.

Play they did. The young Monarchs were plenty scrappy, but just couldn't muster up very much offense in the eventual 66-20 loss to Garden City in first-round action of the 31st annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shoot-Out.

TMP will play Colby in today's 3 p.m. consolation semifinals at HMS, while Garden will take on Great Bend in the championship semis at Hays High School, also at 3.

Great Bend broke a 35-all tie at the third-quarter stop, hitting three 3-pointers and going 8-for-8 at the free-throw line in the fourth period, to beat Colby 58-48 in other first-round action at HMS Thursday.

Even in the Monarchs' lop-sided loss, McFarland remained positive.

"I expected this; Garden City is good," she said of the Buffaloes, a Class 6A team that won last year's Western Athletic Conference title. "But I like playing teams like this. It gives us good competition, shows where our weaknesses are."

While there will be plenty of teaching moments from this one, McFarland's youngsters also could look at some positive points.

They stayed with the Buffs early in the game and trailed by just four, 12-8, on two free throws by freshman Megan Koenigsman before two Garden upperclassmen popped in back-to-back 3-pointers to spread the first-quarter lead to 10.

Garden then scored the first 10 points of the second period, and the rout was on.

McFarland was unfazed, running 10 players in and out with consistency.

"We need experience against aggressive teams," she said.

That the Monarchs got.

The margin continued to build after halftime when TMP was outscored 21-2 in the third period, many coming in the transition game after a steal.

Garden City's pressure defense, including a full-court press part of the game, resulted in 36 Monarch turnovers.

"The more turnovers they created, the more aggressive they got," McFarland said of Garden. "But when we took our time and got the ball into our offense, we were OK ... need to take care of the ball, slow down. It'll come."

TMP was led in scoring by junior Kaylor Gottschalk with eight points. Five players scored at least eight points for Garden City, led by senior Taryn Tempel with 11 and junior Jaymie Bernbeck with 10, and neither set foot on the court the fourth quarter.
