WICHITA -- The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls' soccer team used a strong first half to run away from Word of Life on Monday, winning 7-1 in Wichita.

The win improves TMP to 6-2-1 on the season with only a game Thursday at Wichita North High School remaining on the schedule before next week's regionals. Monday's victory against Word of Life also gave TMP the season sweep over the Fire, as the Monarchs won 9-2 in Hays on April 22.

"They played us a little better. Some of the girls are improving from when they were here," TMP coach Darryl Wellbrock said. "We came out pretty good. Maybe not as organized as I wanted it to be, but we scored some goals pretty quick once we got on a roll."

TMP scored two goals in the first 13 minutes, the first from sophomore Bailey Hageman in the 8th minute, followed by sophomore Racheal Hamel's goal five minutes later. Word of Life scored its only goal of the game in the 18th minute, when Paige Harmon scored via a penalty kick.

TMP answered right back with a goal from freshman Megan Koenigsman in the 19th minute. Then the Monarchs ended the half with a flurry of goals, one each from Hamel (33rd minute), sophomore Annaka Applequist (36th minute) and sophomore Kelsie DeWitt (39th minute) to lead 6-1 at halftime.

Hageman scored the only goal of the second half in the 64th minute. Junior Alyssa Keil led TMP with two assists.

TMP outshot Word of Life 9-3 for the game, with Monarch freshman goalie Deonna Wellbrock recording two saves in net.

With one game remaining in the regular season, TMP has outscored its opponents 37 to 9, shattering the school record for goals, set last season with 26. It's also a record-breaking season for the defense, which by comparison gave up 43 goals in 12 games (going 4-8) last year.

TMP should find out its regional opponent on Saturday when the seeds and parings are announced.
