Regional cross country Saturday

Area high school cross country teams will compete Saturday in their respective regional meets with a trip to the state finale on the line.

The Hays High School cross country team will head to Newton. The girls' race begins at 2 p.m. with the boys at 2:30. The regional includes Great Bend, Maize South, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South, Valley Center and Wichita Heights. The top three teams in the regional qualify for the state finale at Rim Rock Farm. The top 10 individual runners also qualify with the possibility of additional qualifiers.

Thomas More Prep-Marian will compete at the 3A regional in Ellsworth, beginning with the girls' race at 2 p.m. The regional includes Beloit, Cimarron, Southeast of Saline, Ellsworth, Hoisington, Holcomb, Southwestern Heights, Lakin, Lyons, Minneapolis, Norton, Phillipsburg and Sacred Heart. The top three teams and top 10 runners qualify for the 3A finale at Rim Rock. In Class 4A, Colby and Goodland will compete in a 3 p.m. start at McPherson. Belleville is the host for the 2A regional that includes area teams Ellis, Hill City, Oakley, Oberlin, Plainville, Smith Center and Trego.

In Class 1A, Grainfield will host a 2 p.m. start. Northern Valley, Brewster, Lakeside, Wheatland-Grinnell, Hoxie, Logan, Rock Hills, Natoma, Osborne, Palco, Quinter, Pike Valley, Sharon Springs, Stockton and Victoria will compete. State qualifiers in 4A, 2A and 1A will compete next week at the state meet in Wamego.
