Larks defeat Dodge City on road

DODGE CITY -- The Hays Larks defeated Dodge City, 7-2, on Monday night at Cavalier Field. The Larks collected 12 hits and the top seven hitters ,in the lineup had at least one hit.

Second baseman Zair Koeiman finished 3 of 3 with two runs scored and three RBI, including a homer and a double. Center fielder Aaron Cornell went 2 of 4 and left fielder Clayton Garland went 2 of 5 with a RBI.

The Larks had five doubles, including one from Cornell.

Starting pitcher Jason Zgardowski had scuffled a bit lately, but went 7.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks. He is 4-3 with a 2.56 earned-run average in seven starts.

The Larks scored two runs in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth and three in the ninth. Hays moved to 26-9, 19-9 Jayhawk League, while Dodge City went to 8-18 Jayhawk League and 15-18 overall.

* Manager Frank Leo said right-hander Colin Hightower is done for the summer with an arm injury. Left-hander Ross Vance, who will be a junior at the University of West Virginia, is set to join the Larks on Thursday for a non-league home game against Junction City.
