On the Ellis High School Web site, fifth-year coach Matt Carroll has a quote.

"There is a strong tradition of excellence in golf at EHS, and we have been able to continue this tradition over the last couple of years, and hope to continue this into the future," Carroll said.

The Railroaders certainly have, and are currently enjoying the second-best era in school history. From 1991-97, Ellis finished top four at state on four occasions, including a state runner-up finish in 1997. Carroll has started a new era. In 2011, Skyler Tebo finished third overall and Tyler Walters was 17th as Ellis took eighth as a team. It marked the first time Ellis had sent a golfer to state since 2003 and the first team placing since 2000.

Last year, Ellis took fifth at state as Tebo and Austin Lopez each tied for fifth individually. This season, the Railers again qualified as a team for the Class 2A state meet at Mariah Hills in Dodge City. Ellis was second to Oberlin in the regional. Start time is 8:30 a.m.

Freshman Kelly Brown and senior Kade Brown, a NCAA Division I Creighton (Neb.) University signee, lead the Red Devils.

Tebo shot 72 and won the regional title for the third straight year. Seniors Walters, Gage Younger and Ryan Downing and junior Josh Tway lead the team. Walters shot an 82, while Tway had a 89 and Younger a 90.

Other state sites

WaKeeney-Trego, led by senior Cameron Staples, is one of the top 1A teams. Quinter junior Ryan Tebow is among the top individuals. He has now qualified three times and earned all-state with a 14th place last year.

Class 4A is at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney, while Class 3A is at Spring Creek Golf Course in Seneca. The Class 1A meet is at Emporia, while the sand greens will be at Tipton.
