Scholarship in Hammond's name created
With the initiation and support from FHSU's Half Century Club, as well as other private donations, the Dr. Edward H. Hammond Endowed Leadership Scholarship has been established. The scholarship fund was created in honor of Hammond's leadership and quarter of a century in his role as president at Fort Hays State University.
The scholarship will support a third or fourth-year FHSU student with a 3.5 grade-point average or higher. The recipient of the scholarship must display strong leadership skills, campus and community involvement, and have financial need as determined by the financial assistance office of the university.
The Half Century Club, which consists of Fort Hays alumni from the past 50-plus years, initiated the scholarship effort. It was through a challenge gift made possible by a friend of Hammond, Clay Blair, that raised the bar to bring the total to a minimum of $100,000 by December. A letter was sent out toward the end of 2012 to former Student Government Association officers of FHSU asking them to consider a contribution to the scholarship fund. The SGA leadership through the years has been instrumental in working with current and former university administrations.
The current value of the fund is $100,100 and growing.
