Fundraisers are ongoing to help a 5-year-old Hays girl and her family with medical expenses, and two events are scheduled for this weekend.

Ellie Felzien, a kindergartner at O'Loughlin Elementary School in Hays, was diagnosed with leukemia Dec. 29. She and her parents, Trent and Angie Felzien, have been making weekly trips to Kansas City for treatment since.

The local band Shades of Gray will play a benefit concert Friday at Singers, 114 E. 12th, Hays, featuring three different acoustic acts. Doors will open at 7 p.m., with music beginning at 7:30.

The next day, there will be a garage sale at the former Fashion Bug store in The Mall in Hays sponsored by Lifetime Dental Care, where Ellie's mom works. The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition, Nex-Tech Wireless in Hays is selling leukemia-awareness-colored orange "Ellie Strong" wristbands for $5. Those are available for purchase at the main office of Nex-Tech, Trent Felzien's employer, at 2418 Vine, Hays.
