HUTCHINSON -- A brief police pursuit ended with a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon, sending two people to the hospital.

Benjamin McKinney, 18, was driving eastbound in the 700 block of East 11th Avenue at a high speed when the green 2002 Ford Explorer he was driving hit a white 2005 GMC pickup driven by Stephanie L. Wood, 43.

Sgt. Rob Rowe said police were following the reportedly stolen Ford Explorer that did not stop for police in the area of 11th Avenue and Plum Street. The pursuit was called off because the traffic in the area made it too dangerous, Rowe said, but seconds later the vehicle crashed.

McKinney, of the reportedly stolen vehicle, was taken to Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita via medical helicopter with a severe concussion. Wood was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for undetermined injuries and neck and back pain.

McKinney and Wood were wearing seat belts, a release stated.

Charges have not been filed. The case is still under investigation.
