DERBY, Kan. (AP) -- Sedgwick County authorities say a small plane crashed in a field southeast of Derby.

Sheriff Jeff Easter says the plane split apart before hitting the ground Friday morning and pieces of human remains were found. He says it is not clear how many people were on the plane.

The sheriff says witnesses saw pieces falling off the plane as it came down. The plane was headed to Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport.

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are on their way to the scene.
