TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas education officials have signed an agreement with counterparts from France that will create new ties between schools, teachers and students.

The agreement signed last week will connect elementary and secondary schools in Kansas with schools in an academic region near Paris that includes the large cities of Orleans and Tours.

The Kansas Department of Education says the partnership will promote the teaching of French in Kansas, and the teaching of English in the French schools. It also provides for one-year teacher exchanges, student internship programs and collaboration on educational and cultural programs.

Kansas already has similar partnerships with schools in Spain and China. The agreement with France is for four years, with the possibility of a fifth.
