Topeka police shoot and kill man wielding knife

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) -- Topeka police chief Ron Miller says a city police officer shot and killed a man who charged at officers and bystanders with a knife.

The shooting happened Monday morning at the Knightsbridge Apartments in Topeka.

Miller says three officers went to the complex after management asked police to check on a resident who was acting strangely. Miller says the man was combative with police officers and told them to go away.

He says the man eventually chased officers and other residents with the knife, prompting one officer to fire several shots. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

The officer who fired the shots is on administrative leave.
