Larks fall to Wellington after long night

By The Hays Daily News

WELLINGTON -- After a long night Saturday in Hays, the Hays Larks were shut out by the Wellington Heat on Sunday night in Jayhawk League action.

Saturday's non-league, 15-11, 13-inning win for the Larks over Fort Collins, Colo., finished well after midnight.

Then, Hays lost 9-0 to Wellington on the road approximately nine hours later.

The league loss drops Hays to 20-12 overall and 14-12 in the Jayhawk League, still a game back of second-place Derby, which fell to Dodge City on Sunday night. Hays and red-hot Wellington (31-4, 22-3) play again tonight and Tuesday night, then the Larks return home this weekend for a three-game set with the Twins, and will finish a suspended game with Derby prior.

In Sunday's loss, Jake Fromson suffered the defeat in six innings. He gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Wellington put up two runs in the first, third and sixth innings, then put up three more in the seventh. The Larks had seven errors, and the Heat put up 11 hits.

Ty Detmer and Michael Burns led the Larks' offense, combining for four of Hays' six hits.

Nate Olinger provided a little 'Larks Magic' after a long night in non-league action. Olinger hit a walk-off grand slam in the 13th to give the Larks the win. That came after Hays had to battle from behind with a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game.

Olinger drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth, and Derek Birginske singled in a run in the ninth as the Larks tied things up.

Ian Bentley, the sixth Larks' pitcher used, picked up the win after he pitched the 13th. Landon Harper, Austin Unrein, Chris Gammon, David Koll and Brett DeGagne also saw time on the mound.

Olinger finished with just one hit, but drove in six runs, and scored twice. Matt Leuty, Birginske, and Cooper Langley each collected three hits, while Detmer was 2 for 4 and drove in two runs, as did Aaron Cornell.
