Five Larks named to Jayhawk first team

By The Hays Daily News

Five members of the Hays Larks were named to the all-Jayhawk League first team, released Sunday.

The Larks (33-15 overall, 23-13 JL) finished in second place behind Wellington in the league race, then went on to finish third earlier this month at the National Baseball Congress World Series.

Catcher Tyler Detmer, second baseman Zair Koeiman, shortstop Tyler Leffler, outfielder Michael Burns and utility Derek Birginske were named first-teamers.

In addition, Hays had three on the second team in outfielder Aaron Cornell, a fourth-year Lark and former Jayhawk Player of the Year, and pitchers Ethan Landon and David Koll. Blake Rogers, who played for Liberal during most of the season, and at Hays during the NBC, also was a first-team pitcher.

Wellington's Luke Doyle was named the top player in the league and the Heat's Derek Fischer was the most outstanding pitcher.

In addition to those honors, Detmer was named an All-American catcher at the NBC, and starter Jake Fromson was the leading pitcher at the World Series.

For the year, Detmer batted .349 with a team-best 11 home runs, 47 RBIs and 36 runs scored. Burns was the Larks' top hitter with a .382 average.

Koeiman batted .320, his best average in a three-year career in Hays. Birginske was second for the club with eight homers and 34 RBIs. Leffler batted .326 and had 17 RBIs.
