Area roundup - Victoria earns blowout first-round victory

VICTORIA -- After scoring 20 points in the second quarter, the unbeaten Victoria High School football team pulled away even more in the second half for a 50-0 victory Tuesday night in the opening round of the Eight-Man Division II playoffs against Ingalls.

The Knights posted 323 rushing yards, led by Bryan Dome's 15 carries for 224 yards and three scores. Victoria (10-0) now will play at 10-0 Beloit/St. John's-Tipton on Saturday. The winner advances to the sub-state title game against either Sharon Springs-Wallace County or Dighton next week.

Lane Kisner added 15 carries for 47 yards and a score in Tuesday's win against an Ingalls team that made its first playoff appearance since 2006.

Brady Dinkel completed 3 of 13 passes for the Knights for 65 yards with three scores, two to Noah Dreiling and one to Tanner Hobbs. The Knights are in the playoffs for the state-best 12th straight time and is 10-0 for the first time since 2008 when the Knights were 12-0 before they lost in the Division II state championship game to Hanover.

Hoxie 44, Spearville 36

HOXIE -- The one-loss Hoxie Indians made the most of a first-round home game in Class 1A Division I by scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter to claim the victory. Spearville (8-2) had a 30-24 lead going into the final session.

Hoxie's Connor Katt had 34 carries for 218 yards and scored three times, while quarterback Chase Kennedy rushed 18 times for 65 yards and a score. He also completed 7 of 10 passes for 69 yards and a score to Tyler Kaus. Hoxie now will host 10-0 Greensburg-Kiowa County on Saturday. Kiowa County was a 50-14 winner against Solomon in the other half of the bracket. The winner of Saturday's game will face either Claflin-Central Plains (9-1) or Jetmore Hodgeman County (10-0) in the sub-state round next week. Hodgeman County took out Atwood-Rawlins County (8-2), 34-32 in other Tuesday action.

Rawlins County started the season 8-0, but just like last season when it started 7-0, Rawlins County suffered back-to-back defeats to end its season.

Abilene 27, Goodland 26

GOODLAND -- In the first round of the Class 4A playoffs in Goodland, the host Cowboys battled back to within one point late, but went for the 2-point conversion and failed against visiting Abilene. Goodland's season ended at 6-4, while Abilene improved to 6-4, and will play host to 9-1 Buhler at 4 p.m. Saturday.
