Wilson, O'Loughlin getting additional classes

Wilson and O'Loughlin elementary schools will have additional classroom space for the fall.

Superintendent Will Roth told the Hays USD 489 Board of Education during Monday night's meeting that adding the classes will require "some relocation of current services."

An additional fifth-grade section at Wilson and a fourth-grade section at O'Loughlin are needed, according to enrollment projections.

The district can make room by moving the paid preschool, a Head Start classroom and special education classroom to other locations.

"I think we'll be able to accommodate those classrooms and have three sections at all three of the larger schools," Roth said. "From there on, increased enrollment will be pushed to other schools."

Two projects also got the go ahead at the meeting.

On a 6-0 vote, the board accepted an offer from a local contractor to contribute some costs to building a permanent restroom structure near the Hays High School baseball and soccer fields. Board President Darren Schumacher stepped out of the room during the discussion and vote to avoid a conflict of interest, he said.

The concrete block structure will include men's and women's restrooms and an officials' room. The district's share of the cost is approximately $37,500, with the money coming from the capital outlay budget. No timeline was given for completion.

The board also voted 7-0 to accept a bid of $178,350 from Kansas Contract Design for bleachers with a sheet metal deck at Hays Middle School.

The bleachers will be installed as soon as school is out, Deputy Superintendent Richard Cain said.
