Colby Community College to host violence prevention programs

COLBY -- A Colby Community College student who was in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater during a July 2012 mass shooting will talk about the experience during a program called "Through Their Eyes" at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Cultural Arts Center on the college campus.

Also featured will be Curt Brungardt, whose 25-year-old daughter, Jana, was killed in 2008 by an ex-boyfriend.

The program kicks off a week of activities in recognition of Violence Prevention Week.

On Wednesday, students and community members will be given the opportunity to sign the "Pledge to Stop Violence" mural in the Student Union cafeteria.

A self-defense class will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the campus gymnasium. Kenton Russell and the Defensive Tactics group from Fort Hays State University will be the presenters.

The week will conclude with "Random Acts of Kindness" on Thursday and Friday as CCC student groups visit community members and organizations to offer assistance.
