Weekend series looms large for Larks

By The Hays Daily News
The Hays Larks’ upcoming Jayhawk League series with the Derby Twins likely will determine both teams’ position in the upcoming National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita.
The Wellington Heat already have clinched the league title, and the league’s top seed in Championship Week of the NBC. Hays and Derby will battle this weekend for the league’s second spot, and a trip to the second week at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The third- and fourth-place teams from the Jayhawk League will enter the tournament’s first week of play and begin July 25. The winner of the first week’s bracket advances to Championship Week, which begins Aug. 1.
A second-place league finish means Hays would jump the first bracket.
Hays stands 21-13 overall and 15-13 in league play, a half game back of Derby (22-13, 15-12). The two teams will complete a suspended game from earlier this season, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Larks Park. Hays was leading the game in Derby, 7-6, in the bottom of the sixth inning when weather ended it.
Following the completion of that game, they will go into their originally scheduled three-game set. Game 1 will be played following the completion of the suspended game.
Hays is scheduled to be in Dodge City on Monday for a 7 p.m. game with the last-place A’s (16-19, 8-19), then has two non-league games with Junction City, then closes the regular season with the A’s on July 24.
