Downing throws no-hitter for Hays Legion, Eagles win twice Friday

By The Hays Daily News

The Hays Legion won its first two games Friday at the Wild West Fest tournament in Hays. The Eagles defeated Junction City, 10-0, in five innings in the first contest and beat the Colorado Bandits, 9-4, in the second contest. Layne Downing threw a no-hitter in the first game. He also threw a no-hitter during the spring for Hays High School and had several one-hitters last year. In the second game, the Bandits committed six errors and the Legion had one. Downing also made several nice plays at third base, including the last play of the game where he caught the ball, fell down and made a strong throw to first base. John Griffith delivered a key hit with a two-out, three-run double to left center field in the first inning. Marcus Altman pitched a complete game for the victory.

Hays will play at 1 p.m. Saturday against Paola at Larks Park. Clayton Basgall is the probable starter for the Eagles.
