By The Hays Daily News

LYONS -- The Thomas More Prep-Marian baseball team ended its season with a tournament-opening loss in its Class 3A regional.

TMP fell 4-2 to Lakin, ending the Monarchs' three-year streak of making state.

Lakin (17-5) lost the next round to regional champion Lyons (18-3).

TMP (15-7) finished with just three hits in the game, with two coming from freshman Ricky Hockett. Junior Jordan Gottschalk had the other.

Monarch senior Shane Zimmerman (4-4) pitched all six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, off five hits and four walks while striking out 10.

Lakin put itself up 3-0 after three innings.

TMP closed the gap to 3-1 when Gottschalk hit an RBI double to center field in the top of the fourth, but Lakin ended the fifth by scoring a run to put itself up 4-1.

TMP rallied in the sixth and seventh, scoring a run in the sixth following an error, and the Monarchs had the tying run at the plate in the seventh when Zimmerman struck out looking.
