The USD 489 Board of Education will discuss filling two administrative positions during a regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Toepfer Board Room in Rockwell Administration Center, 323 W. 12th.

The board will consider offering an interim superintendent's contract to one of five candidates interviewed Friday.

"In the event we're prepared to take action on that position, we have it on the agenda. We're prepared to do that," board president Greg Schwartz said at last Monday's work session.

Superintendent Will Roth is retiring Oct. 1.

Deputy Superintendent Richard Cain, who has overseen the district's finances, also is retiring effective Sept. 1. The board hired Randy Gustafson as a consultant in July to help look for ways to improve efficiency. Gustafson will make a presentation on his recommendation to fill Cain's position with a business manager.

Ken Beran of Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball and Howard Sloan of Sloan Tax and Accounting will present proposals to assist the district in the finance position until the position is filled.

The board also is expected to take action on hiring Shannon Demel as interim assistant principal at Hays Middle School. Demel was a Washington Elementary School fourth-grade teacher last year.

The HMS school interview team and two board members interviewed candidates for the interim position last week.

If approved by the board, Demel will fill in at HMS for assistant principal Shanna Dinkel, who will be moving to the central office for a year to assist with administration and curriculum.

The board also will be asked to approve the president's signature on a rental agreement with Glassman Corporation to lease a chiller for Roosevelt Elementary School. The board voted in July to lease a portable chiller after hearing that parts for a broken air-conditioning unit aren't readily available.

At last Monday's work session, board member Marty Patterson asked if the chiller was "up and running."

Cain said it was.

There is an initial set up charge, "but then (the) charge is week by week," Cain said.

The initial charge is $7,500 for the chiller, delivery is $3,200 and $2,925 for connections.

The board also will consider bids for one activity and one route bus.

Other items on the agenda are:

* A contract with Pepsi for vendor rights at Hays High School.

* An agreement with Clayton Holdings for financing construction of FEMA classrooms.

* Appointing board clerk Cheryl Shubert as the designee to approve purchase orders.

* The 2014 budget hearing and approval.

* Consider modifying the board meeting calendar.
