Family flaunts fashion

Hannah James proudly held a large light purple ribbon for reserve champion Thursday night, handed to her for the summer shorts outfit she was wearing, sewn by her older sister, 10-year-old Maggie James.
It could just as well as been for her performance on stage.
Hannah, who will turn 3 later this month, entertained the crowd at the 2013 Ellis County 4-H Fashion Revue with her on-stage antics while proudly showing off her multi-colored top and light green shorts.
She showed no fear as she went to the stage in the Unrein Family Building at the Ellis County Fairgrounds with her two older sisters by her side.
Maggie and 7-year-old Emily hung back and watched along with the rest of the audience as Hannah marched to the front of the stage and performed her turns to perfection.
"It's a good thing she had a nap today," the girls' mom, Alice James, said with a laugh.
While Maggie won reserve champion for Hannah's outfit, she made it a clean sweep in the junior division, also claiming the grand champion ribbon for her own summer dress.
Maggie and Emily -- members of the Ellis Sunflowers 4-H Club who sew under the watchful eye of their mom and grandmother, Vickie Gassmann of Norton -- are two of several up-and-coming 4-H'ers in the county.
"It's nice to see new faces out here," said Susan Schlichting, Ellis County Extension agent for 4-H and youth development. "It's a cycle thing, and we have a lot of young families in (4-H) right now."
Maggie was one of three double winners Thursday, as three of the divisions in the clothing buymanship division took home both the grand champion and reserve champion ribbons. The others were Anthony Walters of Buckeye Jr. Farmers and Monica Towns of the Ellis Sunflowers.
Other winners included Mary Claire Towns and Amelia Jaeger, junior girls clothing buymanship champion and reserve champion; and Jacob Schmeidler and Dakota Metzler, junior boys clothing buymanship champion and reserve champion.
No fair events are scheduled for today but will resume Saturday morning with the rodeo queen contest at the rodeo arena.
