Kansas City-based Commerce Bancshares last week announced the acquisition of Tulsa, Okla.-based Summit Bancshares. The transaction was values at $40.6 million. The acquisition will add approximately $261 million in assets, $213 million in loans and $231 million in total deposits to the Commerce portfolio. The transaction is anticipated to close in the third quarter of 2013, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals and Summit shareholder approval. An application will also be made to merge Summit Bank with Commerce Bank. Commerce is a $22.2 billion bank holding company with approximately 360 locations, located in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado.

Darin Reed, Ellis, a field agent in the Spinelli Agency in Kansas, was recognized as the Fraternal Insurance Counselor of the Year at the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors convention this month in Savannah, Ga. FIC of the year honors the exceptional fraternal assistance Reed has provided to members through help with death claims, customer service and other administrative work. Reed has been a field agent since 2005 and, in 2012, finished as the No. 5 field agent in Knights of Columbus Insurance out of 1,300 agents throughout America and Canada. He was named to the Supreme Knight's Sales Club for the sixth time and also is a 2012 qualifier for the Million Dollar Round Table, a group comprised of the premier financial professionals in the world. Reed is the field agent for councils in Ellis, Park, Grainfield, Angelus, Oakley, Colby and Goodland.

Chris Robben reached 20 years of service with Nex-Tech in  January. He is the  network operations manager, based out of Victoria. Shawna Walters reached 15 years of service with Nex-Tech in  March. She is a collections representative at the Hays  office. Austin Gabel reached five years of service with Nex-Tech in  February. He is a senior Internet systems developer  based in Hays. Jessica Martin reached five years of service with Nex-Tech in  January. She is a help desk agent and receptionist in Hays.

During a recent visit to Hong Kong, Houssain Kettani, Fort Hays State University professor of informatics, was selected as a fellow in the International Association of Computer Science and Information Technology, and the Science and Engineering Institute. Both recognized Kettani for his research contributions and services. IACSIT is a nonprofit international scientific association of distinguished scholars engaged in computer science and information technology. SCIEI is a nonprofit association dedicated to promoting international education and university cooperation in the field of science and engineering.

Sunflower Bank recently announced the promotion of Rachel Augustine to the position of teller supervisor at the 4720 Roth location in Hays.  Augustine will be responsible for managing and supervising the tellers and front-line operations. Augustine's previous position was consumer lender. She is from Hays, a graduate of Hays High School and attended Fort Hays State University. She began working for the bank in 2005 as a customer service representative and teller. Lisa Scheve was promoted to the position of mortgage loan originator at the 4720 Roth location in Hays. Scheve recently completed all training and certification requirements, and will be responsible for serving and guiding customers that are purchasing a new house, as well as refinancing and new loans. Scheve's previous position was consumer lender. Scheve, a Hays native, began her career with Sunflower in 2009 as a customer service representative.

Hays City Manager Toby Dougherty recently announced the appointment of Carolyn McCollum-Scantlin as communications center coordinator for the city of Hays. McCollum-Scantlin has been interim communications center coordinator since the position was created in November.

American Family Insurance recently announced four northwest Kansas agents have been recognized for providing outstanding customer experience under the American Star Excellence in Customer Experience Certification. Brian Ruder, an agent in Hays, has been an agent for American Family since 2008. Whitey Kohl, an agent in Hays and Ellis, has been an agent since 1984. Downer L. Hull, Plainville, has been with an agent since 1997. Mary Jo Hafliger, WaKeeney and Ness City, has been an agent since 1987.
