Vintage vehicles heading to Hays
By RANDY GONZALES
Cars your granddad might have driven are coming to Hays next weekend.
The Wichita Horseless Carriage Club's annual Air Capital Tour will be based in Hays this year, as antique car enthusiasts explore the city and surrounding towns.
"We just kind of wanted to break out and come north," said board member Dan Closson, who helped organize the tour. "We're looking forward to it. We think it will be fun."
Closson estimated 25 antique vehicles will be transported from the Wichita area to Hays, with registration starting the morning of Aug. 30 at Hampton Inn. Club members will be shopping downtown Hays in the Chestnut Street District that afternoon, starting at 2:30 p.m.
That is the best time for the public to see the cars, which will be parked at 10th and Main. Closson, who has been part of the club for seven years, will bring his 1928 Chevy 1-ton truck.
Club members will explore Hays on Friday, then hit the road to Stockton, Glade and Phillipsburg on Aug. 31 before returning to Hays, and Victoria and Pfeifer on Sept. 1, then back to Hays for the trip home.
"The real activity for most antique car clubs, besides public education about the old modes of transportation, is going on tours out in the countryside," Closson said.
