The Hays City Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and decide if the use and sale of fireworks should be banned this year.

The vote comes after the Ellis County Commission affirmed its own ban on fireworks in rural areas Monday. Fireworks also were banned within the city in 2013.

In other business, commissioners will vote on renovating Hays Regional Airport to prepare for the new airline carrier. City staff has recommended partnering with the Federal Aviation Administration to help pay for construction and engineering costs. The improvements list includes expanding the secure holding area, adding a restroom, fixing the roof and building a baggage check room.

The FAA would provide a $918,783 grant, and the city would pay $466,402.
