Felony charges have been filed in Ellis County District Court in connection with two unrelated cases.

Filed late Wednesday was an abuse of child case involving an incident reported to Hays Police on June 17 when a 2-year-old child was being treated at Hays Medical Center for a fractured leg.

Jody M. Brooks, 26, was charged with a single felony count of abuse of a child. The abuse occurred on June 17, according to the criminal complaint.

It alleges Brooks "struck and/or stomped on the child," causing the fracture, bruising to his genitals and buttocks and bruising to the child's left ear, right eye and left side of his head. Brooks was being held in the Ellis County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

An unrelated criminal complaint filed Tuesday stems from a fatal accident in Ellis County on June 15.

Brittnie J. Walker, 21, Longmont, Colo., was charged Tuesday in Ellis County District Court with a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter-driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or an alternative charge of reckless involuntary manslaughter. A second felony charge of failure to immediately report an accident resulting in death also was filed against Walker.

The charges stem from an accident that resulted in the death of 20-year-old Jordan Dale Schreurs.

According to the criminal complaint, Walker was driving a car at 25 to 45 mph with Schreurs riding on top of the vehicle, a move that's called surfing. Schreurs fell off the vehicle, suffering head injuries that caused his death.

A week prior to the fatal accident, Walker had been arrested at about 3 a.m. June 7 in the 1200 block of Vine and was charged in Hays Municipal Court with driving under the influence. That charge is still pending.

The criminal cases filed this week follow a series of felony sentencings in Ellis County District Court resulting in five people going to prison and host of others assigned to probation, Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees said.
