Washington teacher seizes opportunity to move up
In her ninth year at Hays USD 489, Shannon Demel knew she was in for a change.
She just didn't know how big a change it would be.
Demel spent the past eight years teaching fourth grade at Washington Elementary School and planned to move to the first-grade classroom this year.
That was before the Hays Middle School assistant principal position opened when Shanna Dinkel was appointed interim curriculum director for the district.
Demel was ready to move up after earning her building administration certification right out of college.
"As soon as I graduated, I started grad school," she said.
Demel was selected from a small pool of candidates interviewed and approved by the board of education.
"It's always been in the back of my mind that this was the direction I wanted to go, and this was a great opportunity to be an assistant. To be able to learn from Mr. Pallister is an invaluable experience."
A native of Kanopolis, she and her husband, Dustin, have three children -- Kyler, 8, Karlie, 6, and Kolt, 1 1/2.
Madison Mall took over Demel's classroom at Washington.
