One hurt when Downs home explodes
By the Salina Journal DOWNS -- An explosion right about midnight levelled a house in Downs, sending one occupant to the hospital with burns.
Kelly Berkley, owner of the Corner Drug and Gift store, lives about three blocks from the house, where her employee Nyla Powell and her husband Darwin live.
"It woke me up and shook my windows, it was about exactly midnight," Berkley said. "I looked out the window to the west, and then my husband's fire pager went off."
"There were humongous flames and smoke," she said. "I went down there to check on my employee, and the house was gone, the walls had just blown out."
Late Friday morning, Nyla Powell was being treated in the burn unit at Via Christi in Wichita, where she was listed in serious condition.
