County sales tax issue approved by landslide margin
Ellis County voters overwhelmingly approved a 0.5-percent county sales tax on Tuesday. In a landslide victory, the measure passed with 82 percent of the vote, 2,603 to 569.
Eighteen percent of registered voters went to the polls for the special election. The sales tax will go into effect no sooner than Oct. 1.
The sales tax will go toward a $14.3 million project for construction of an EMS/rural fire building, as well as expansion and renovation to the county jail, Law Enforcement Center and courthouse.
The tax will sunset in five years or when the project is paid off, whichever comes sooner.
