Longtime supporters give $1M to FHSU

Longtime Fort Hays State University supporters Ed and Donna Stehno have pledged $1 million for scholarships.
The gift was announced at a news conference Friday morning.
"I've always wanted to give a million dollars to an organization," Ed Stehno said, "and it wasn't hard to determine what organization we should give it to. We love Fort Hays State University."
The money will go for scholarships primarily for athletes, but it isn't targeted for a specific sport, FHSU President Edward H. Hammond said.
"To have athletics be the benefactor of the gift is very humbling and an honor for us," FHSU Athletic Director Curtis Hammeke said.
The Stehnos moved to Hays in 1971. Ed Stehno was an FHSU professor in the Department of Education Administration and Counseling. He retired in 2004. Donna Stehno earned a degree from FHSU and was a school nurse.
"Any time people make a seven-figure donation to the university, it's a special day," Hammond said. "When those individuals are part of our Fort Hays family, it makes it more special."
For their 50th wedding anniversay, the Stehnos' three children set up the Stehno Family Scholarship Fund at FHSU.
"So you see we are not leaders, we are followers. We are following in our children's footsteps. They are the leaders. ... They want us to share (our money) with mankind," Ed Stehno said.
