Fireworks cause large tree fire in Hays neighborhood

The Hays Fire Department responded Friday evening to a large fire in the 300 block of West 40th that likely was caused by fireworks. Two large fire trucks with five firefighters responded.

The Hays Fire Department responded Friday evening to a large fire in the 300 block of West 40th that likely was caused by fireworks. Two large fire trucks with five firefighters responded.

According to a press release from the fire department, the fire was reported shortly before 9 p.m. in the residential neighborhood. The fire affected approximately 40 feet of a row of trees behind a residence at 4004 Country Lane. Firefighters shut off the supply to a gas meter that was damaged by the fire.

Hays Police officers, who were on scene first, reported the fire was threatening to spread to a nearby building. On this report, the HFD officer-in-charge called for a third fire truck with two additional firefighters and an Ellis County EMS ambulance to respond from the fireworks safety detail at Fort Hays State University.

No injuries were reported.
