Fireworks cause large tree fire in Hays neighborhood

The Hays Fire Department responded Friday evening to a large fire in the 300 block of West 40th that likely was caused by fireworks. Two large fire trucks with five firefighters responded.

According to a press release from the fire department, the fire was reported shortly before 9 p.m. in the residential neighborhood. The fire affected approximately 40 feet of a row of trees behind a residence at 4004 Country Lane. Firefighters shut off the supply to a gas meter that was damaged by the fire.

Hays Police officers, who were on scene first, reported the fire was threatening to spread to a nearby building. On this report, the HFD officer-in-charge called for a third fire truck with two additional firefighters and an Ellis County EMS ambulance to respond from the fireworks safety detail at Fort Hays State University.

No injuries were reported.
