Former bishop of Salina Diocese dies at 84

OGDEN — The Most Rev. George K. Fitzsimons, who served as bishop of the Diocese of Salina from 1984 to 2004, died Sunday at his Ogden home at age 84.

The Kansas City, Mo., native had been in the priesthood since his ordination in 1961. Prior to seminary, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1950 as a pilot who achieved the rank of first lieutenant.

Fitzsimons retired to Ogden — halfway between Junction City and Manhattan — in 2004.

A wake will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina with Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger officiating. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, celebrated by Weisenburger, visiting bishops, priests of the Diocese of Salina and visiting clergy.  Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Salina following the Mass.
