Local business leaders celebrated the official opening of the Hays Middle School addition at a Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting Thursday morning.

School administrators, Hays USD 489 Board of Education members, Chamber members and others gathered for refreshments and tours of the addition to the southeast corner of the building.

Calling it a good investment, BOE President James Leiker thanked the community for its support.

HMS Principal Craig Pallister thanked those who worked on the addition.

Pallister said he's excited to be able to tell parents of the school's 600 students the building has a safe area in a storm.

Built to Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines, the eight classrooms, restrooms and hallways can serve as a storm shelter for the whole building.

Cost of the project was estimated at $2.7 million, with USD 489 paying approximately $1.4 million.
