Early Childhood Connections Head Start teacher Becky Greer has been named the 2014 National Head Start Teacher of the Year.

She earned the title after being named Head Start teacher of the year for Kansas and Region VII by the National Head Start Association.

A native of Oklahoma, Greer began her career at Rainbows United, a private preschool for children with disabilities, in Wichita in 1980.

She started her career with early childhood and grades K-9 certification and later was certified in early childhood special education.

"I love it. The kids are great," Greer said in an interview last month. "The families are great. I truly like the little ones."

Greer has been a Head Start teacher in Hays since the early 1990s, first at then Felten Middle School and now at Lincoln Elementary School.

This year, she has a morning class and afternoon class of 15 students each.

As the 2014 NHSA Teacher of the Year, Greer will receive a commemorative plaque, cash award and free registration for the 2014 NHSA annual conference and awards banquet in Long Beach, Calif., in April.

Early Childhood Connections Director Donna Hudson-Hamilton was named Head Start administrator of the year for 2013.
