Former Ellis mayor recovering after wreck

Former Ellis mayor David McDaniel is recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident Saturday.
Glen Keller, who with McDaniel owns Trio Home Center in Ellis, said McDaniel's car was hit by a semi without a trailer east of town. McDaniel was giving a tour of the area to a pastor candidate for Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis at the time.
"He and his wife came out to see us as a congregation so we could meet him, and he could meet us," Keller said.
After a 24-hour stay in the hospital, McDaniel was released. He has been at work part-time since Monday but will wear a neck brace for four to six weeks. McDaniel also has a bone bruise on his left knee.
"It's pretty stiff," McDaniel said of his neck this morning.
Pastor candidate Michael Badenhop and his wife, Christine, traveled from Fort Wayne, Ind., to meet with the congregation. Michael Badenhop was treated and released in the emergency room, but his wife had back surgery, McDaniel said.
"It could have been much worse; we were very fortunate," Keller said.
McDaniel, the longtime mayor of Ellis, was defeated for re-election earlier this month by Lyle Johnston.
