Hays USD 489 Board of Education vice president Darren Schumacher has resigned effective immediately.

In his resignation letter submitted to the board and shared with USD 489 staff, Schumacher said he is resigning because he's being relocated for his job. He previously managed the Carlos O' Kelly's restaurant in Hays, which closed earlier this month.

Schumacher has served on the board since July 2007. He served as BOE president during the 2012-13 school year and vice president for two terms, 2011-12 and the current school year.

The board will accept Schumacher's resignation and adopt a resolution to post the board vacancy notice at its next meeting. Once the notice is posted, there will be a 15-day period for those interested to apply for the open seat.

The board's next meeting is March 31.
