The pull of family ties brought Andrea Stephens back to northwest Kansas.
Stephens, a Colby native, opened her business, Stephens Chiropractic and Wellness, at 1007 Cody, Suite A, last month.
She attended Colby Community College, where she also played basketball before finishing her undergraduate degree at the University of Kansas. After completing her graduate work at Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, she opened a practice in Overland Park.
The move to Hays came after some family members were in an accident last year.
"It's best to be close to family," Stephens said.
Besides her parents and sisters, Stephens has a large extended family, which includes two area coaches.
"People come in that don't even know me (but) know one of my family members," she said. "I didn't have that in Overland Park. It's nice having that little connection."
There's even a personal connection to her office manager, Taryn Crawford. Crawford also grew up in Colby, and growing up, the two were best friends.
After already having an office in Overland Park, opening the Hays office was easy.
"It wasn't like I was starting a business. I was relocating. I knew what I was doing," Stephens said.
The practice is wellness-based, she said.
Besides chiropractic services, Stephens offers acupuncture and cold-laser therapy.
Acupuncture, which can be effective for headaches, back and neck pain, allergies, infertility and stress, provides an alternative for some people who don't want chiropractic care, she said.
"It's about balancing the nervous system. If you have a healthy nervous system, you will be healthy. Your body will take care of itself," Stephens said.
Stephens sees clients of every age, from babies to seniors.
The business also offers Xymogen -- all natural pharmaceutical grade vitamins, minerals and supplements -- for sale.
"There's a lot of chiropractors in town, but this office is different," Crawford said. "We focus on the prevention, and we believe in the power of the body. Give it what it needs, and you will be healthy."
